Magnet calculator

Find the right magnet for your application

Careful preparation is the key to a successful and safe project. The performance of a magnet can vary significantly depending on the conditions in which it’s used. This tool helps you make empirical predictions of the holding force for our handheld magnets under a variety of real-world scenarios. By entering your application parameters, the calculator estimates the safety factor (SF) for each magnet based on actual measurement data from Blumags products. The safety factor indicates how securely a magnet can hold your load, as seen in this formula where F is the holding force and L is the applied load:

SF = F L

This is calculated in two directions – perpendicularly and laterally:

SFperp = Fperp Lperp

SFlat = Flat Llat

The resulting overall safety factor (SFtot) is taken as the lowest of the two.

Keep in mind that the distance between the magnet and the steel surface has a significant impact on the holding force. This distance – often referred to as the air gap – can result from corrosion, paint, curvature, or other surface irregularities.

Use this tool to select a magnet that provides an adequate safety margin, reduce uncertainties, and increase the likelihood of a successful, reliable, and safe outcome.

Metric/Imperial

Applied load

The maximum load that will be applied on the magnet.

kg

Load angle

0° = lateral, 90° = perpendicular.

°

Air gap

The distance between magnet and steel surface.

mm

Plate thickness

Thinner steel may lead to saturation.

mm

Friction coefficient

Friction helps at angles < 90°.
