Blumags now offers magnets with a new level of corrosion resistance that will meet and exceed virtually any longevity requirements in underwater environments. The design is based on a fully sealed construction and materials with supreme corrosion resistance. These magnets are intended for applications where replacement is difficult or not feasible — such as mounting sensors for mooring line monitoring or sonar equipment on offshore wind installations.
Fully Enclosed, Welded Housing
The magnet is enclosed in a fully welded metal housing, sealed on all sides. This eliminates seawater exposure to internal components. The extra layer of metal at the bottom reduces holding force compared to conventional designs (see our insight article on airgap). In return, it provides consistent performance in subsea environments.
Material Options: Stainless or Titanium
Two housing materials are available, depending on the required durability:
Longlife: 316 stainless steel
Adequate for many underwater applications with long lifetime requirementsInfinity: Titanium grade 2
Virtually immune to corrosion in seawater and suitable for permanent installations
Mounting and Adaptation
The standard magnet design consists of a central M8 or M10 threaded stud in the same material as the housing, combined with additional clearance holes similar to the Willy 500 and Willy 800 models.
However, the design can be adapted to suit specific requirements. Typical variations include adjustments to magnetic holding force, alternative mounting interfaces or release mechanisms and integration features tailored to the customer’s equipment.
Common Applications
These subsea magnets are designed for “install and forget” use cases, such as:
Sensors and instrumentation on subsea structures
Sonar transducers on offshore wind structures
Inclinometers for mooring line monitoring on FPSOs or FPUs
